The versions of this piece currently available all force a compromise. What's on IMSLP is the score alone, in archaic notation, scored for instruments that have largely fallen out of use — the post horn among them, and a bells part written across three players. The modern re-orchestrations that exist solve the practical problem by drifting from Mozart's intent: violas added, saxophones substituted in, lines reassigned without explanation. This publication takes a different approach. Rather than picking one compromise, it gives you two complete editions — both faithful to the original — and lets you choose which one fits your players. Both are included in a single purchase.

Historical Edition — for ensembles with period instruments who want a historically accurate performance.

  • Re-engraved from Mozart's original score, preserving the original scoring exactly as written.
  • Individual parts created to match, assigned as Mozart scored them and in their original transpositions.
  • Trumpets in D and C, and the various horn transpositions, left as written — players switch instruments as the original requires.
  • The bells part for three players, kept intact rather than consolidated.

Modern Edition — for the standard modern orchestra, with the original intent preserved and every change disclosed.

  • Bells combined into a single part, playable by one person on celeste or glockenspiel.
  • Post horn lines distributed into Trumpet 1 and Horn 1, with every redistribution clearly marked in both score and parts, so nothing is hidden.
  • Trumpet parts in C, with identical parts in B-flat, so players can take whichever they prefer.
  • Horn parts in F.
  • Modern notation throughout — clean, legible, current engraving practice with marked measure numbers.
  • Editorial markings shown in parentheses, so you always know at a glance what is Mozart's and what is not.
