Robert Hazard wrote "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" in 1979, but it was Cyndi Lauper's 1983 recording that made it permanent — a bright, defiant piece of new wave that has been read as a feminist anthem for forty years and shows no sign of leaving the culture. This arrangement follows Buzzy Lee's 2024 cover rather than the Lauper original. She slows it down and hushes it, and what surfaces underneath the synths is a tender, unguarded love song — the same words, turned almost into a vow. It makes the piece work in places the original never could.
